"One Book, One Stratford"

Sunday, Jan. 10, 2 pm: Author Jennifer Baszile visits the Stratford Library to kick-off "One Book, One Stratford"

Did you see the great article this week in the Connecticut Post about our program, "One Book, One Stratford" ? The idea of the “One Book” program is that everyone in town reads the same book at the same time, much like a town-wide book club. The library has chosen Jennifer Baszile’s acclaimed memoir, The Black Girl Next Door, as the town selection. From now until March, the library has scheduled a number of talks, film showings, lectures, and discussions that touch on the themes explored in Baszile's book. At the “One Book, One Stratford” kick-off event on January 10 author Jennifer Baszile will be in attendance to discuss and read from her memoir. The Black Girl Next Door is the true story of Baszile’s growing up black in a white section of Los Angeles in the 1970s and ‘80s. Professor Baszile commented to the Post that although her particular story is set in previous decades, her theme of how families struggle to achieve the American dream and become part of the cultural landscape of the US is still vitally relevent today. Jennifer Baszile received her B.A. from Columbia and her Ph.D. in American history from Princeton. She was the first black female professor to join Yale University's history department and has been named one of the "Thirty Leaders of the Future" by Ebony magazine. She currently lives in Connecticut. Copies of The Black Girl Next Door will be available for purchase at the event – autographed by the author. The library also multiple copies for loan. The “One Book” event is co-sponsored in part by Simon & Schuster. Light refreshments will be served.

New computers for the New Year

A New Year's Invitation: You are invited... ..to use the library's new computers in our Adult and Teen service areas. The PCs are brand new and ready for you to access the internet and use Microsoft Office applications. The PCs have read/write CD drives and USB ports to save your work. We even have new printers in black/white and in color. Come in and see us in 2010! You may be pleasantly surprised at all we have to offer. Holiday Schedule: The Library will be open until 8 pm on Wednesday, Dec. 30. We are closed on Thursday and Friday (New Year's Eve and New Year's Day) but we'll be open again our normal hours on Saturday (10 am - 5 pm ) and Sunday (1 pm - 5 pm). Have a great holiday and stay safe.

Brand New Computers are coming!

They will be installed Monday, December 28th & Tuesday, December 29th

In order to upgrade the library's PCs and software, there will be No Computer Access on Monday, December 28th & Tuesday, December 29th.

During the PC upgrade, we will not be able to offer access to the internet, word processing, the Career Center, the Express Computers, or library databases.

Holiday Concert - Sunday December 13

The Stratford Library and Friends of Square One Theatre will present their annual holiday program on Sunday, December 13 at 2 pm. The event, “Holiday Music with Childs & Zamparo”, will take place in the Lovell Room of the Stratford Library. The concert is free and open to the public. Pianist David Childs and his wife, vocalist Janet Zamparo, will perform a variety of holiday favorites including “Sleigh Ride”, “Winter Wonderland” and “The Christmas Song”. David has been a full time pianist and educator for 25 years. He performs full time in the tri state region in a variety of venues.
